Your car failed an emissions or smog test in Metro Detroit and you’re wondering if that kills your chance to donate. It doesn’t. You can absolutely donate a failed-smog vehicle through MotorCity Wheels to benefit Heritage for the Blind. We accept vehicles in virtually any condition, including those that can’t pass Michigan emissions requirements. You don’t need to fix it. You don’t need a fresh test. We handle the process, pick it up for free, and you receive a tax receipt.
Here’s how it works around Detroit, from the city to suburbs like Warren, Southfield, Dearborn, and downriver: when you donate, you’re transferring title to a charity, not selling the car privately. The smog and emissions rules that typically apply to person-to-person sales usually do not apply to charitable donations. Your vehicle is sold as-is at auction or to a buyer who specializes in repairs or parts. The proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. You avoid repair bills on a car you don’t want, and the vehicle is moved on to someone equipped to deal with the emissions issue.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your failed-smog vehicle
Start online or by phone and let us know your car failed emissions or smog. Share basics: year, make, model, condition, and where it’s located in Metro Detroit—whether that’s Midtown, Sterling Heights, Livonia, or anywhere nearby. We’ll confirm it’s eligible (almost all are) and explain your tax-deduction basics right away.
2. Skip the repairs and schedule free pickup
There’s no need to spend a dollar on emissions repairs or retesting. Once you’re ready, we set a free tow pickup time that works for you—driveway, street, garage, city lot, running or not. Our service covers all of Detroit and surrounding suburbs at no cost to you.
3. Sign the title and transfer the problem off your hands
On pickup day, you’ll sign your Michigan title over to the charity via MotorCity Wheels. Because this is a charitable donation, not a private sale, typical smog requirements don’t apply the same way. The tow driver or coordinator will walk you through the simple title steps so you’re fully released from ownership.
4. We move and sell the car as-is, emissions issue included
After pickup, we handle transport and sale of your failed-smog vehicle as-is—usually at auction or to a buyer who repairs or parts out emission-problem cars. You don’t interact with the buyer at all. Proceeds from the sale support Heritage for the Blind’s programs and services.
5. Receive your tax receipt for your donation
Once the car is sold, we mail you a tax receipt. For most donors, that’s at least $500. If it sells for more than $500, we provide the documentation you’ll need with IRS Form 1098-C. You’re done with the emissions headache and you’ve turned a failed test into a tax deduction.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect Michigan title
Tip: We do need a valid Michigan title to complete your donation. If you’ve misplaced it, contact the Michigan Secretary of State for a replacement before scheduling pickup. Make sure the name and VIN on the title match the vehicle so the transfer goes smoothly and you’re clearly released from liability.
Still trying to fix the emissions problem first
Tip: Don’t pour money into repairs just to donate. Since your car is being transferred to a charity, the emissions failure doesn’t disqualify it. Unless you want to keep the vehicle, skip the shop visit, donate as-is, and let the next owner or auction buyer handle any required emissions work.
Car stored in a tight or inaccessible Detroit location
Tip: If your vehicle is wedged in a tight alley, underground garage, or behind another non-running car, tell us upfront. We can often still arrange towing, but knowing your exact situation in advance helps us send the right truck and avoid rescheduling your Metro Detroit pickup.
Unpaid fines or holds unrelated to smog
Tip: A failed emissions test usually isn’t a donation barrier, but other issues can be. If there are active police holds, court orders, or major title disputes, we may need those cleared before transfer. Let us know if you suspect any legal or lien issues so we can advise you honestly.
